About

James Felton is an abstract painter working from his studio in Surry Hills, Sydney. Born in the United Kingdom, he has a range of works dating back several years to his time living and painting there.

James’ practice explores the tension between conventional forms of self-expression and the freedom to move beyond them. Shaped by trends, expectations and manufactured desires, our expression can become increasingly detached from instinct and individuality. His works explore both the clarity found in breaking through these boundaries and the quieter loss that can occur when individuality is gradually eroded by them. At times, a fading sense of self remains where a dying light still presents itself beneath the layers. What emerges is an exploration of clarity, natural instinct and the possibility of an expression that feels sharper, more personal and distinctly one’s own.
